Chassis design

Sara Yusuf - 201000343

Introduction
This assignment is to do some research on chassis and the different types of chassis in order
to choose one of them to design a sport car. The operating conditions of the chassis are
mentioned because these are very important situation of any car, with a possibility to avoid
fatigue and failure. A sport car was chosen to a space frame chassis that is available in the
workshop, so the dimensions were taken and different components were set on it in order
to do some calculation and find the centre of gravity of the chassis. Product specification
design is one important part of the assignment that we can mention our product
specifications.

What is chassis
A chassis is the main structure of the vehicle. It carries and connect all the components
including the body so it is called carrying unit of vehicle. It is the most crucial element that
gives strength and stability to the vehicle under different conditions. . At the time of
manufacturing, the body of a vehicle is flexibly molded according to the structure of chassis.
Automobile chassis is usually made of light sheet metal or composite plastics (Broad &
Gilbert, 2009).
The major loads involved are:
1. Rear suspension and final drive
2. Front suspension and steering
3. Engine/ gearbox
4. Fuel tank
5. Seats, steering column, pedals, hydraulic cylinders
6. Radiator
7. Battery
8. Spare wheel

Function/ purpose of chassis

To connect all four wheels with a structure this is rigid in bending and torsion.
It provides strength needed for supporting vehicular components and payload
placed upon it.
Auto chassis ensures low levels of noise, vibrations and harshness throughout the
automobile
Connect the front and rear suspension without excessive deflection.
Be able to support all components and occupants and should absorb all loads fed
into it without deflecting unduly.
It must safely support the weight of the vehicle components and transmit loads that
result from longitudinal, lateral, and vertical accelerations that are experienced in a
racing environment without failure

Types of chassis
There are several types of chassis that can be helpful in designing and building a car, by
choosing the chassis which fits the needs, these types include:
