Religion/Family Life
Through our regular Religious
Education program and completion
of a workbook, students will begin
preparing for the sacrament of Reconciliation.
This workbook might be sent home occasionally with
your child to complete any unfinished work. Please
assist them in completing any assigned activities.
Science
Our next unit in Science looks at Understanding
Matter and Energy, Properties of Liquids and Solids.
The big ideas for this unit are:
Materials that exist as liquids and solids have
specific properties.
Liquids and solids interact in different ways.
Some liquids and solids can be harmful to us and
the environment.
Language
Congratulations to those students who are signing
on and using Raz-Kids regularly to improve their
reading skills. Keep up the great job. Please
continue to read regularly with your child. When
your child is reading to you, pause occasionally to
ask them questions about what they have read (i.e.
Is this a fiction or non-fiction text? How do you
know? What are the important facts on this page?
Who is the main character? What is the problem in
this story? What would you do if you were in their
situation? Does this remind you of any other books
you have read? etc.).
In class we are continuing to learn how to use a
Shape Go Map to help us retell stories after
reading. We will also be learning to answer
questions about a text in proper sentence format,
using information from the text and our own ideas.
In writing, we will be applying what we have learned
about the elements of a story (i.e. main characters,
setting, problem, main events, and solution to the
problem.) to write a narrative (fiction) story.
Math
In math we are finishing our unit on sorting and
data management and will begin our new unit on
Measurement. We will estimate, measure and
record the length, width, height, area and
perimeter of various shapes and objects using
both non-standard (paperclips, pencils) and
standard (centimetres and metres) units of
measure. We will learn to use centimetre-based
measuring tools such as rulers, measuring tapes,
and metre sticks. Much of our class discussion
will focus on when, why, and how we measure
things, and why we need standard units such as
centimetres and metres to help us compare and
talk about measurements. At home, look for ways
to use measurement language, such as longer
than, shorter than, or farther than to compare
lengths or distances.
