Instructions

Demonstrate an understanding of SI Units, fundamental, supplementary &

derived units, and apply the concepts of mass, force, moments, torque and
equilibrium conditions in engineering systems
Apply the concepts of energy, energy conservation and conversion as
related to mechanical engineering systems
Analyse & solve linear motion problems involving inertia, momentum and
impulse to formulate requirements of power and energy needs
Examine & solve angular motion problems including centripetal and
centrifugal forces and rotational inertia for various engineering applications

The report layout and marking schedule are shown throughout this
assignment. A list of useful resources is shown on the last page.
Answers must be well laid out and clearly show each step. You must explain
in English every step of your calculation. Answers must be supported with
diagrams where appropriate.
Show 3 significant figures in your working. Show answers to 2 significant
figures.

Olympic Street Luge Track

Bahrain wants to build a new Olympic Street Luge Competition Track. As a group of
under-graduate Bahraini Engineers you have been asked to investigate the
mechanical parameters for this. To determine the best and technically challenging
track, a model will need to be built and tested for suitable performance. You will
calculate the mechanical aspects of your track using what you have learnt through
your own independent study and from the data collected from the model you built.
The Model
You will be required to build a Two Dimensional system, including a track and luge,
(the system maybe developed into 3D with banking and the infamous wall of death with
clearance from your on-site project engineer and if progress permits) . You can build the

system by any means possible. Between the propulsion stage and the final straight,
there must be at least 1 hill and 1 drop-off (option 1) OR jump (option 2), in any
order you like before competitors enter a safety buffer-zone.
