whichcloverspecies)toillustratethedoctrineoftheTrinity,isapparentlymorerecentthanthat.Theaccretionoffolkcustomsand
beliefsaboutthe5thcenturySaintPatrickbegan,itseems,withinacenturyofhisdeath,withthemarvelladenhagiographyof
Muirchu;bynowheappearsacreatureoflegend.TheDisneytouchwasaddedinAmerica.
However,wehavetwodocumentsfromPatricksownhand,thatstanduptoanyreasonablecriticalinquiryascontemporarywithhim.
Andtheyringinavoicethatisunmistakeablythatofarealman.ThefirstishisConfession,ratherinthespiritofAugustinesthough
verymuchshorter;thesecondhisLetterofexhortationtothesoldiersofCoroticus,evidentlyaPictishorScottishwarlordwith
fallenChristiansinhistrain.WhatbreathesthroughoutthesetwodocumentsispreciselytheCatholicismthathasbeentaughtdownto
thisday,infusedwithscripturalandcreedalreferencesthatanyCatholicshouldrecognize.
