Chapter One

My name is Ciel. This is my story.

It all began when I was 15 in a small town in Italy. I didn't realize what was
going on then, and I had no clue about how things worked in my world. This
was a very long time ago. I was naive then, and was very poor. There
weren't much expectations where I lived, other than to be hopefully married
off to someone or worse . . . sold off.
I never imagined that things would come to this. Here's my story though. A
story of horrible things and wonderful things both. A story of hope and
despair, as well as a story of love and hate.
I was working one day to help my parents out with their small shop. They
sold various items, but never really made a lot of money off of it. As I
finished up for the day, one last person came in. He was dressed way too
entirely rich to be at our shop, but I figured maybe he was trying to go easy
on his money or planned to resell some of the items.
He spoke with my father for a bit, and asked to speak to him privately. I
thought it was a business deal perhaps, so I left them to their own. After
that, I was called to a back room, and was sat down at a table. I was curious
as to why I was brought into this, but I was soon to find out.
We never told you this, but we're not from here originally. We escaped a
town that got destroyed by some people with bad intentions, and we've been
hiding ever since. We may not have money, but we carry the blood of
nobility, and this is why this gentleman is here. You're arranged to marry
into royalty. We should have explained that to you. said my father. His
stare was blank, like he truly didn't want to discuss it.
I suppose this would be a better situation for me to leave, considering. But
I never expected this. Nobody raised me as a girl of society. Will I be okay?
I asked. I could almost hear the tears in my voice.
It's my fault. I wanted our lives separated after that incident. You will be
with good people though. Listen to this gentleman, he will tell you what you

will need to do. My father told me. The look on his face was like he had
been stabbed with a knife, and his tone as if he was being told I had been
murdered.
I nodded with a tremble in my heart, and then the gentleman took over. The
gentleman looked as if he could care less about anything.
Get yourself washed up and ready, then put these clothes on. You will take
nothing with you that's here except one thing of your choice. Choose wisely.
Come outside and get into the carriage when you're ready.
I was handed a very expensive dress made of black silk trimmed with indigo,
along with shoes and other things to go with it. I did as told with my
mother's help, and I picked up my kitten
, which was my choice. I said my goodbyes and departed.
A day's journey brought me to a secluded area. I saw a place that nobility
was expected to live in when we arrived. A servant greeted me at the door,
and I was brought promptly to a library like I had never seen before. It was
filled with with beautiful paintings, books I didn't know how to read,
tapestries of velvet, and furniture I was almost too afraid to touch. I sat
down and a servant gave me tea served in intricately designed teacups, that
I now recognize as jade cups coming from Japan.
A lady came in in a red silk dress. She had a cold stare from her gray eyes,
and her lips looked like they were stained with blood. Her skin was so
translucent and pale, that she looked like a doll. Her hair the color of
chocolate stained with cherries. Somehow, she instilled a fear in me, like a
predator. My cat backed down, and hid under the chair I was sitting in when
she walked in.
I didn't like her presence very much. I realized then why my father had the
look he had on his face before I left. There was something off about the
gentleman and the lady I couldn't quite put my finger on. I pushed it off
after a thought or two, thinking maybe that's the way of nobility. She came
close to me and stared me right in the eyes while she grasped my hand to
help me up. I could feel the cold of her skin, and smelled a scent on her that
was sickeningly sweet but something that instinctively screamed death at me
at the same time.
My name is Aurelia. You will spend the next few years with me, constantly
learning. You will learn to be well-mannered, well-dressed, cultured, and
learn how to act accordingly. Depending on how quickly and well you learn,
you will be introduced to the court and the prince within the next few
months or so.

She touched my hair, and felt my skin. I was fascinated by her, and yet I
feared her.
You're quite something. I can see it in you, you fear me and yet want to be
me. You will surpass me with time. There is something else you will need to
learn. Nobody here is . . . your typical nobility. If you wish to survive this,
you will have to cooperate and become like us. You have a potential that
none other human could surpass. This is why we tracked you down. We're
considered monsters, but really we're not. You could say we're more like
angels of death. We're not cruel, but we are dangerous. We are the kind of
vampires, and you will be changed into one of us. She said almost quietly,
as if telling some deep dark secret.
At that point, I felt like I was being cornered. I wanted to run and fight, but I
couldn't move. Her cold hands trailed up my arm slowly, seductively even.
My eyes closed for a moment, and I could feel the cold of her face near my
neck. I felt a tear trickle down my cheek. I felt a biting down on my neck. I
began to feel lightheaded as I was drained. I was near the point of
unconsciousness, when she poured something into an empty teacup and
pried my mouth open, and drained the contents into my mouth. At that
point, I knew that death had come. I could feel the life going out of me, and
the consciousness leaving as well. Everything went dark and blank. It
seemed like forever being lost in the void. I saw a blue light in the distance.
I followed it, thinking it was the path to heaven and that it was the only path.
When I reached the blue light, I saw a little girl in a white dress with black
hair and blue eyes. The blue surrounded her like a mist. I started to speak
to her, but she spoke first.
I know you've come here against your will, but it's your choice from here.
Accept my offer of eternal life, and you will be returned and be like them.
Refuse my offer, and I will lead you to the path of death and void where you
will be searching for the afterlife yourself. Do you wish to be like them, and
to live off the life of others? Do you wish to be like them, and live forever
with no return, and to no longer return to being human? She said, like an
all-knowing, self-centered, spoiled brat.
I thought about it for a moment. If I could return, maybe there will be hope
that they're not choosing to reveal things that could reverse this and allow
me to escape that might save me one day. There was also a possibility I
could be lost in that void forever.
I accept. I said to her.
The process will take years, and it you will begin your metamorphose into
what you have now been destined to become. The prince that you have been

told about will complete this process. Take care that you listen to those
around you that are like you, but do beware they will not be as they seem
sometimes. The good may be bad deep down, and the bad may be good deep
down.
She took my hand, and with what only I can describe as a flickering of a
flame being lit, my consciousness returned and I found myself laying on the
floor. I was lifted up, and a few spots on my neck cleaned off. It felt like
forever, but I noticed the clock showed that only a few minutes had passed.
