Subject: SAPOA Negotiations
Sheryl,
T just wanted to make sure we have some measure of clarity on our approach. The
Council is very focused on continuing the negotiations. We will discuss
Councilman Medina's CCR on the lawsuit at the Governance Committee meeting
next week. Atnext week's B session we will review reports by the third parties
who were hired. [believe both of these will be fruitful discussions, but our
chances at negotiations are hurt by continuing the public media campaign from
either side, Thave made clear to the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce
Leadership that there is no need for additional advertising at this time to support
the City’s position or to defend you. As you know Mike Helle was re-clected by a
slim margin last week. Any further advertising focusing on your role in the
process will not assist us in working to assure the union that we want to obtain
resolution at the negotiating table. Our message has been clear from the start --
‘our desire is to provide the best health care and additional benefits to our excellent
public safety force that we can afford. The back and forth ads do not help in
conveying that message.
Please let me know if you have any questions on this. Thanks for all your hard
work on this very difficult issue. Ivy
