We first heard about Juliette Gordon Low when some of our group members
went to a local Girl Scout event, learning about the founder of Girl Scouts. We didnt
decide to do a project on her until a year later when we found out the theme for 2015
NHDs theme was Leadership and Legacy. Our group spent weeks contemplating the
perfect History Day topic. From the beginning, we wanted it to be about someone who
revolutionized the way women were looked and thought of. We carefully considered our
options and we realized that Juliette Gordon Low, founder of Girl Scouts, was the
perfect person. As we dove further into our research we learned that she also
contributed to the fight for equal rights. We wanted to prove Girl Scouts was more than
cookies and camping. No one really knows about the founder but she played a key role
in history, then and now.
Together we searched the internet, looked through letters written by Juliette
Gordon Low, read newspaper article during that year, and hunted through other records
that were available to us. For a better understanding of how Low has affected peoples
lives we got interviews. In late November we met up with Mary Kay Stolting and Sabrina
Stolting, who have been involved in Girl Scouts for over 30 years each. We also got
email interviews with Stacy Cordery, Ginger Wadsworth, and Shannon Kleiber, all
authors who wrote about Juliette Gordon Low. We also contacted Katherine Keena, who
works at the Juliette Low Birthplace and managed to ask questions to Mrs. McCaffery, a
Girl Scout troop leader. All of these interviews helped up gather information on Juliette
Gordon Low. After careful consideration, we decided to do a website. Doing a website
allows us to all work on it all together but not necessarily in the same location. It also
allows us to convey our creativity using words, pictures, and videos.
We spent much of our time over the last few months working to fill our website
with reliable information. We tried to make it simple to understand and read while
keeping it as historically accurate as possible. The background we chose was the Girl
Scout trefoil. It represents the part of the Girl Scout Promise. We found a website for
making interactive timelines, and we used it to make our timeline. It includes pictures
and the events are in chronological order. We believe we conducted our research well
and picked a good topic to do our National History Day website entry.
