Abstract
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) plays an important role in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) diagnosis and for
monitoringtheevolutionofthediseaseovertime[1].TheadventofnewquantitativeMRItechniquesandthe
constantimprovementinspatialresolutionyieldanincreasingamountof3Dimagedata,whoseinterpretationisa
tediousanderrorpronetask.TheautomaticanalysisofsubtlechangesbetweenMRIscansisanimportanttoolfor
assessing disease evolution over time. Methods have already been proposed to detect changes in serial
conventionalMRI[2].However,fewworksaddresschangedetectionindiffusionweightedimaging,whichisa
promisingtechniqueformonitoringneurodegenerativediseases.Weproposeanautomaticmethodforchange
detectionbetweenscalarimagesdiffusionweighted,withapplicationtothefollowupofmultiplesclerosislesion
evolution.Themethodreliesonthegeneralizedlikelihoodratiotest[3],whileaccountingforthenonstationarity
ofnoisethatcorruptstheseimages.Validationhasbeenconductedbysimulatinglesionappearancesinrealdata.
Theresultsshowthataccountingforthenonstationarityofnoiseallowstosignificantlyreducethenumberoffalse
detections.Furtherworkwillalsoconsiderchangedetectiondirectlyontensorimages. Suchautomaticmethods
forchangedetectionindiffusionweightedimagingmayprovideanobjectivewayforcharacterizingtheevolution
ofMSlesions,inparticularforthoselocatedinthenormalappearingwhitematter,andausefultoolforstudying
MSconsequencesonanatomicalandfunctionalbrainconnectivity.
