Fred Shuttlesworth was one of the top leaders of the Civil Rights
Movement and he was also a Baptist Minister. He worked with Martin
Luther King Jr. and the SCLC. He was born on March 18,1922 in Alabama
and he died on October 5, 2011. He was born into a large family and he got
his last name from his stepfather. His stepfathers name is William and his
mothers name was Alberta. William worked as a farmer and coal miner. The
SCLC is the Southern Christian Leadership Conference that was formed,
right after the Montgomery Bus Boycott, in 1957. The purpose of the SCLC
was to advance the cause of Civil Rights in America but in a non-violent
manner.
I think Fred Shuttlesworth was a successful person because he helped
Martin Luther King Jr. with the civil rights movement. He was also a
minister which helped out more even though he was almost killed a couple
of times. This person influenced the African American community by

fighting for them and their rights. He did great things in his life to stand up
for what he believed in.
