Filanthropos ke eleimon Theos.

Theophany (Theophania - "Appearance of God") is one of the Great Feasts


of the Orthodox Church and is joyfully celebrated on 6 January.
It is the Great Feast that reveals the Most Holy Trinity to the world through
the Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ. (MATTHEW 3 : 13 - 17; MARK 1 : 9 - 11; LUKE 3 : 21
- 22)

We hereby commemorate Christ's Baptism by St John the Baptist &


Forerunner in the Jordan River, and the beginning of our Saviours
earthly Ministry.

Theophany is the culmination of the Nativity Season, which begins with


Christs Nativity on 25 December and ends with His Baptism on 6
January.
The Holy Service of the Great Blessing of Water is performed on Theophany
and the Sanctified Water is used by the Parish Priests to Bless the homes
of the Faithful, who also receive small bottles of Blessed Water for their
personal use.

THE ANTIDORON

AT THEOPHANY THE HOLY TRINITY APPEARED CLEARLY TO MANKIND FOR THE FIRST TIME
when God the Father's Voice was heard from Heaven, the Son of God
Incarnate (in His human Nature) stood in the Jordan River, and God the
Holy Spirit hovered above Him like a dove.

THE HOLY SPIRIT NEVER MANIFESTED OR INCARNATED AS A WHITE DOVE! IT IS BLASPHEMOUS TO EVEN CONSIDER
THAT NOTION! GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT IS ALWAYS INVISIBLE - THUS HE HOVERED LIKE A DOVE ABOVE OUR
LORDS HEAD. WITNESSES COULD ONLY TESTIFY TO SOMETHING DESCENDING FROM HEAVEN AND HOVERING
OVER OUR SAVIOUR. THEY CERTAINLY DID NOT SEE ANYTHING PHYSICAL AT ALL!!
GOD THE FATHER AND GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT ARE ALWAYS DEPICTED ON HOLY ICONS AS DIFFERENT SHAPES AND
COLOURS, WHILE GOD THE SON AND WORD, HAVING BECOME INCARNATE (A FLESH AND BONE MAN) IS ABLE
TO BE DEPICTED IN HIS HUMAN FORM.
ALL THREE PERSONS OF THE HOLY TRINITY ARE ONLY DEPICTED AS THREE IDENTICAL ANGELS AS THEY APPEARED
TO ABRAHAM AT THE OAKS OF MAMRE, WHOM HE ADDRESSED IN THE SINGULAR FORM AS LORD NOT
LORDS.
THE HOLY TRINITY IS CO-ETERNAL AND CONSUBSTANTIAL.
OUR LORD INFORMED HIS APOSTLES THAT THE ONLY WAY WE CAN SEE GOD IS TO LOOK AT HIM JESUS CHRIST
WHO EVENTUALLY LEFT AN IMAGE OF HIS BELOVED FACE ON THE BURIAL FACECLOTH, WHICH ST PETER AND ST
JOHN FOUND NEATLY FOLDED IN HIS EMPTY TOMB. THIS IS KNOWN AS THE MANDYLION NOT MADE
HANDS AND IS THE VERY FIRST HOLY ICON OF OUR INCARNAATE GOD. MP

Epiphany is a reference to the Western Christian Feast that occurs the


same day, which commemorates the Adoration of the Magi of the New
Born King their worship of the Child Jesus, at the Holy Familys new
home in Bethlehem, some time after the Nativity of Christ, although the
term "Epiphany" does appear in the Services for this Feast. ( T H E I R
VALUABLE GIFTS WERE USED AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF

AFTER THE PRIEST HAS DISMISSED THE CONGREGATION, WE MUST QUIETLY STAND
IN A QUEUE TO RECEIVED THE ANTIDORON FROM HIM.
HOLDING OUR RIGHT HAND IN OUR LEFT HAND, WE
HUMBLY RECEIVE THE ANTIDORON AND KISS THE
PRIESTS HAND WITH ALL DUE RESPECT FOR THE HOLY
ETERNAL PRIESTHOOD OF CHRIST OUR LORD AND
SAVIOUR.
ANTIDORON MEANS INSTEAD OF THE (HOLY) GIFTS
BECAUSE IT IS NOT THE HOLY EUCHARIST BUT THE
ALTAR BREAD AFTER THE LAMB FOR THE HOLY
EUCHARIST HAS BEEN REMOVED.
SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH, THE FAITHFUL WOULD PARTAKE
OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST EVERY MORNING, NOT HAVE EATEN OR DRUNK
ANYTHING SINCE THE NIGHT BEFORE.
THE ANTIDORON, THEREFORE, BREAKS OUR FAST AND CLEANSES OUR PALATE
AFTER PARTAKING OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST.
VISITORS AND CATECHECHUMENS THEREFORE ARE WELCOME TO RECEIVE
ANTIDORON AND BREAK THEIR FAST WITH THE REST OF THE CONGREGATION.

Thy Resurrection. We have been


filled with Thine Unending Life. We
have enjoyed Thine Infinite Delight
which in the world to come be well

the Grace of Thy Holy and Good
and Life-giving Spirit, now and

Nazareth. It included the celebration of Christs Nativity, the Adoration of


the Magi and all the early childhood Events of the Infant Christ - such as
His Circumcision and Presentation at the Temple - as well as His Baptism
thirty years later by St John the Baptist and Forerunner in the Jordan
River the beginning of His Public Ministry.
This Great Feast, like that of Holy Pascha and Pentecost, was the fulfillment
of a previous Jewish Festival, in this case - the Feast of Lights.
The Holy Services of Theophany are set up exactly like those of the Feast of
the Nativity, which, historically were established only later.

HOLY THEOPHANY VESPERS & DIVINE LITURGY OF ST BASIL THE GREAT

The Divine Liturgy of the Theophany begins with Psalms of Glorification and
Praise instead of the usual three Antiphons. The Baptismal Verse
mentioned in St Pauls Epistle to the Galatians 3:27 once again replaces
the Thrice-Holy For as many as have been Baptised into Christ, have
put on Christ! Alleluia!
The Holy Gospel Lessons of all the Services describe our Lord's Baptism by St
John the Baptist in the Jordan River and the Epistles explain the
consequences of the Divine Epiphany, which is the Incarnation of Christ
the coming to earth of the Word and Son of God.
Since the main Feature of the Feast is the Blessing of Water, it is prescribed
to follow both the Divine Liturgy of the Forefeast or Eve of Theophany
and the Divine Liturgy the following day.
All Faithful Christians should attend these significant Holy Services because
THE BLESSING OF THE WATERS VERIFIES THAT ALL MANKIND, AND ALL CREATION,
WERE CREATED TO BE FILLED WITH THE SANCTIFYING PRESENCE OF ALMIGHTY GOD.

Christ, accept my Pleading.
O despise not me, I pray Thee nor my words so poorly chosen, as I come with
