GPWS produces visual and audible warnings to notify the flight crew when any of
the parameters are exceeded. The major feature of the enhanced GPWS is the
incorporation of terrain awareness and display functions. The terrain awareness
alerting algorithms in the GPWS computer continuously compute an advisory level
and a warning level clearance envelope ahead of the aircraft. If the boundaries of
these envelopes conflict with terrain elevation data in the terrain database, an alert or
warning is issued.
