GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: Perform the following situations as indicated. Present complete and easy-to-follow
solutions for situations with problem solving using the spaces provided. Incomplete answers are considered
wrong. Wrong spelling is also considered wrong. Mark all final answers. Use only BLACK PERMANENT INK in
answering.
WARNING: Anyone caught cheating in any form will get a grade of 5.00 in this course. So dont even try.
1.

Two rods and one cable are attached to the

support at O. If two of the forces are as shown,
determine the magnitude F and direction of
the third force so that the resultant of the three
forces is vertically downward with a magnitude
of 1200 lb.

2.

If the resultant of the two forces and couple M

passes through point O, determine M.

3.

The 50-kg homogeneous smooth sphere rests on

the 30 incline A and bears against the smooth
vertical wall B. Calculate the contact forces at A
and B.

4.

Find the angle of tilt with the horizontal so that

the contact force at B will be one-half that at A
for the smooth cylinder.

5.

To test the deflection of the uniform 200-lb

beam the 120-lb boy exerts a pull of 40 lb on
the rope rigged as shown. Compute the force
supported by the pin at the hinge O.

6.

Determine the force in each member of the

loaded truss indicating if in tension or in
compression. All triangles are equilateral.

7.

Determine the forces in members BC and FG of

the loaded symmetrical truss. Indicate if in
tension or in compression. Show that this
calculation can be accomplished by using one
section and two equations, each of which
contains only one of the two unknowns. Are the
results affected by the statical indeterminacy of
the supports at the base?

8.

Determine the distance s to which the 90-kg

painter can climb without causing the 4-m
ladder to slip at its lower end A. The top of the
15-kg ladder has a small roller, and at the
ground the coefficient of static friction is 0.25.
The mass center of the painter is directly above
her feet.

9.

Determine the x- and y-coordinates of the

centroid of the shaded area. Also determine the
centroidal moment of inertia and the moment of
inertia with respect to the x- and y-axis.

10. Determine the magnitude of the pin reaction at

A and the magnitude and direction of the force
reaction at the rollers. The pulleys at C and D
are small.
