1. The helical compression spring used to engage in a clutch has 9.5 effective coils of 10 mm steel
wire. The outer coil diameter is 80 mm. the free length of the spring is 185 mm. When in place with
the clutch engaged, its length is 130 mm. Assuming that G = 80 Gpa and shear stress is limited to 150
MPa. determine the force, in kN, that can be sustained by the spring. (3 points)

2. A body weighing 2500 lbs falls from a height of 1 ft and strikes a spring with a spring constant of
3000 lb/in. Determine the deformation of the spring, in inches. (3 points)

3. Compute the maximum deflection, in mm, of a 20 coil-helical spring having a load of 75 kgs. The
spring has a modulus of elasticity in shear of 79.84 Gpa, outside diameter of 101.6 mm, wire diameter
of 9.525 mm. (3 points)

4. A high alloy spring has a total of 16 coils and modulus of elasticity in shear of 85 GPa. Compute for
the deflection, in mm. Consider a load of 100 kg, spring outside diameter of 9.66 cm, and wire diameter
of 0.65 cm. (3 points)
