AHM3109 Formative Proposal

I propose to write, record, and construct an album based on the work of Jennifer Walshe of around
half an hour in duration. This will involve tracks based on Jennifer's style of composition, notation
and aesthetic. I will concern myself in part with Jennifer's approach of using found sounds, such
as samples from youtube videos, twitter feeds, and unconventional uses of both standard and nonstandard instruments. This will most likely take the form of two or three electronic tracks. Part of
my work will involve producing scores in a notational style similar to that found in dirty white
fields (2001) which exhibits Walshe's established notational style of prose notation describing
scenes to be depicted, description of actions, and description of sounds to be produced. These scores
will be realised by multiple performers as a demonstration of Jennifer's understanding that however
precise her scores are, performers are human and will therefore interpret her sounds differently to
how she conceived them. I will submit these scores along with the CD to demonstrate my
knowledge of her notational styles.
Along with the CD I will submit liner notes detailing the processes involved in making each track
or piece, relating them back to Jennifer's work, and describing any difficulties I came across.
I will produce an album cover drawing influence from Walshe's visual art and its Dadaist
tendencies.
