INTRODUCTION AND FOCUS QUESTIONS


Music in the field of art may be considered as the most ancient because of the urge to sing
and dance in response to feelings of anger, joy or sorrow springs from the body itself.
The 20th century has been a period of radical changes, both in science and art. Advancement
in technology have paved the way to improve almost all aspects of our everyday life. Inventions
such as telephones, televisions, cassette tapes, computers, synthesizers and many others lead to
experimentation in music and arts. New approaches to the organization of pitch and rhythm and
vast expansion of the vocabularies of sounds were made. Although some artists stick with the usual
style, others tried to experiment new means in creating music. Truly the 20 th century has opened its
windows to all kinds of concept.
In this module, you will experience how it is to perform and appreciate the beauty of
the music in the 20th Century. As you go through the module, remember to search for the
answer to this question: How do historical and cultural background of the 20th century music promote
understanding of the way of life in the past?

In the 20th century, many musical styles coexisted with impressionism. The
movement is represented by the two best composers of this era, Claude Debussy
and Maurice Marvel. Transcending moods and suggestive imagery in
Impressionism gave birth to unconventional harmony, rhythm, and tone color.

music-mixing computer applications, combine the selected music and follow the pattern of the simple music
listened to in the previous activities. Save the created electronic music on a flash drive or you can directly send it
to the messenger of your MAPEH teacher just indicate Activity number, your name and your section.
Or you may also follow the instruction given on page 20 of your textbook. Criteria is given on your
answer sheet.

impressionism and was able to create a poem based on expressionism.
