Background Information for Learners

Music in the 20th century described art music that was written nominally from 1901-2000,
inclusive. Musical style diverged during the 20th century as it never had previously. Consequently,
this century was without a dominant style. These styles were: impressionism, expressionism,
neoclassicism, avant-garde music and modern nationalism.

Background Information for Learners


“Music is the language of the soul” and People may express their own feelings and emotions
through music.
In the history of Music and Arts, every period has its own characteristics style and distinct
features which could be in relation to the society from which it originated.
20th century music (1901-1999) brought new freedom, wide experimentation and
development of advance technology with new musical styles and forms. These new musical
styles were : IMPRESSIONISM, EXPRESSIONISM, NEO-CLASSICISM, AVANT
GARDE, and MODERN NATIONALISM.
The musical styles were truly unique and innovative as seen in the work of these
composers: Claude Debussy(1862-1918) , Maurice Ravel ( 1875-1937), Arnold Schoenberg
(1874-1951), Bela Bartok (1881-1945), Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), Sergei Prokofieff
(18911953) , George Gershwin (1898-1937), John Cage (1912-1992), Leonard Bernstein
(19181990), Philip Glass ( 1937- ) and others.
In addition, the 20th century saw dramatic innovation in musical form and styles.
Composers and songwriters explored new forms and sounds that challenged the previously
accepted rules of music of earlier periods. Hence, these composers truly extended the
boundaries of what music was thought to be in earlier periods and clearly reflected the
growing globalization of musical styles.

• Choose any of the songs from the West Side Story that would suit your own voice .
• Warm up your voice before you start the practice. Follow the health tips in singing. Practice
the song that you have selected in a cappela ( without an instrument) or with an instrument.
• Request the members of the family to watch and listen to you and ask their suggestions for
the improvement of your song performance.
• Master the song and give expressions in singing. Record your performance during practices
and listen carefully to your voice.
• Apply the elements of music such as the correct pitch, accurate rhythm, well-defined
dynamics,etc.
• Final performance: Dress properly and invite the members of the family to watch and listen
to you.
• Make a music video using your cellular phone, digital camera , or video camera.
• Show the music video to your teacher for the evaluation.
Option 2: Search some songs similar to the songs of the West Side Story . You can watch
on television or rather listen over the radio to the singers singing those songs. Select
one and practice then follow the steps written above.

Activity 4: Electronic Music- Five (5)- minute recording of organized sounds from
environment.
Directions:
1. Record different sounds that are heard in your surroundings such as the following : the
noise coming from the market, animal sounds, sounds produced by vehicles passing in the
streets, blowing winds, etc. Use your cellular phone, digital camera , or video camera.

2. Arrange the recorded sounds in different ways like playing in different tempi such as :
allegro (fast) or adagio (slow ) or vice versa and different dynamics such as piano (soft
) to forte (loud) or vice versa. Time allotment : 5 minutes only.
3. Submit the output to your teacher for the evaluation.

Activity 3: Singing and Recording Activity: A Song from West Side Story
Mechanics:
1. Choose a song from West Side Story (Tonight, Maria, Somewhere and I want to be in
America)
2. Sing and perform the song that you choose.

tambourine, and maracas: or improvise instruments from the environment.

1. Choose one composition by any of the music of the composers in the 20 th Century.
2. If the composition has lyrics, you will sing the piece; if it is purely instrumental, you may
hum the melody.
3. If individual activity, choose one composition that you will perform solo.
4. If group activity, do the following procedure:
• Select one composition that you like best or that you are familiar with.
• You may also improvise simple vocal or instrumental accompaniment/s to the song
or instrumental piece that you may choose. You may add a second or third voice.
