Music of the 20th Century

Title

I. Introduction:

In the 20th century music made many changes as to the kind of music that old and new composers alike. 20 th century music
describes “art music that was written nominally from 1901 to 2000, inclusive. Musical style diverged during the 20 th century as it
never had previously…Aleatory, atonality, serialism, musique concrete, electronic music, and concept music were all developed
during this century.
During this period the following types of music was developed and was also influenced by the development of art in the
20th century.
Impressionism is a movement in painting that started in France in the 1860s. It is characterized by visual impression of the
moment in terms of the shifting effect of color and light. In music, it may be described generally as having refinement, delicacy
and vagueness. Just like the effect of impressionistic painting, this type of music projects a hazy atmosphere and dreamlike
quality.
Expressionism is a modernist movement that started in Germany at the beginning of the 20 th century and was initially an
expression in painting and poetry. This evokes moods and ideas for which the artist seeks to express meaning. In relation to
music, expressionism conveys true emotions in exaggeration through the application of atonality and dissonance or the lack of
agreement and consistency in music.
Electronic Music is the process of creating music using computers in synthesizing or producing digital audio signals. Using
this electronic way of producing sound, music is produced out of the range of traditional musical instruments and can create
other sounds from nature and the environment. The musical sound produced can be played at a slow and fast speed and can be
forwarded and rewind.
Chance Music is also called Aleatory Music from the Latin word “Alea” meaning dice. It IS a composition created by
chance rather than its logical order. It is a style in music where different sounds, musical or non-musical , are combined together
to create any kind of musical composition based on chance.

Music of the 20th Century

Title
I. Introduction:

You have Previously learned that the 20 th Century music was composed of varied types of music like
Impressionism, Expressionism, Electronic and Chance Music. And each type has also its own characteristics. These types
of music also would not have been possible if not because of the composers who have brilliant minds and have passion
in music,

Let’s start with the Impressionism music, it may be described generally as having refinement, delicacy
and vagueness. Just like the effect of impressionistic painting, this type of music projects a hazy atmosphere and
dreamlike quality. Just like the works of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel in which their music are those that have
sounds that “call forth such images as moonlight, waterfalls and fireworks” which possesses the following
characteristics… The rhythm is irregular in terms of phrases; it avoids the traditional harmonic progression; it has
unresolved dissonance; and it uses whole-tone scale, uses the 9 th chord and also frequently uses modality and exotic
scales.

Two notable Composers of the Impressionism music are Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Claude Debussy’s
“Clair De Lune” is just one of his well-known composition while Maurice Ravel is his composition “Bolero.” Both Debussy
and Ravel are composers from France.

Expressionism is another type of music in the 20th century, it conveys true emotions in exaggeration through
the application of atonality and dissonance or the lack of agreement and consistency in music. Arnold Schoenberg is the
most famous composer who applied this technique in composition with his famous composition, “Pierrot Lunaire.”

Electronic and chance music are among those type of music in the 20th century which uses technology to
create such music as mentioned in the previous dicussion. Edgard Varese is a proponent of the electronic music and is
considered as the “ Father of Electronic Music” and his sample composition is entitled “Poeme Electronic while John
Cage who is an avant-garde composer is considered as the “Father of Indeterminism” whose famous compositions
include “Sonatas and Interludes” and the famous “4’33” (Four minutes and thirty Three Seconds.”

Title

I. Introduction:
20th Century is a period of great changes in the field of arts and music, artists and composers were given
the chance to express their feelings through the kind of art and music that they wanted to share with their
viewers and listeners.
In the field of music, when phonograph and gramophone was invented and mass produced both the
people from the middle and lower class could have the chance to listen to less expensive recorded classical and
opera music which only the elite or the rich in the 19 th century could listen live. Radio broadcasting which was
also done in the 1920s also allowed many people to listen such kind of music.
Because of the innovation of time, there were dramatic changes in the forms and styles of the music in
this period. Many composers, musicians, and songwriters explored new forms . They challenged the stablished
form of music of the 18th century. They introduced the so-called altered chords (like Jazz). The invention of loud
guitar amplifiers and sound system also contributed to the new trend in music.

MODERN ART
Title

I. INTRODUCTION:
The beginning of the 20th century is recognized as a period of revolution and change in art. It is the birth
of Modern Art, it includes artistic work produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the
1970s. Modern Art is usually associated with art in which the traditions of the past have been thrown aside in a
spirit of experimentation. But whatever the changes maybe, there remains the pillars of creating a beautiful
artwork, the elements and principle of art. What are the elements and principles of art can you still remember
them? Let’s take a look again on what make a beautiful artwork and how they works!!!
The elements of ART:
Line - An element of art defined by a point moving in space. Line may be two-or three-
dimensional, descriptive, implied, or abstract.
Shape - An element of art that is two-dimensional, flat, or limited to height and width.
Form - An element of art that is three-dimensional and encloses volume; includes height, width
and depth (as in a cube, a sphere, a pyramid, or a cylinder). Form may also be free flowing.
Value - The lightness or darkness of tones or colors. White is the lightest value; black is the
darkest. The value halfway between these extremes is called middle gray.
Space - An element of art by which positive and negative areas are defined or a sense of depth
achieved in a work of art .
Color - An element of art made up of three properties: hue, value, and intensity. • Hue: name of
color • Value: hue’s lightness and darkness (a color’s value changes when white or black is
added) • Intensity: quality of brightness and purity (high intensity= color is strong and
bright; low intensity= color is faint and dull)
Texture - An element of art that refers to the way things feel, or look as if they might feel if
touched.

The Principles of ART:

Rhythm - A principle of design that indicates movement, created by the careful placement of
repeated elements in a work of art to cause a visual tempo or beat.
Balance - A way of combining elements to add a feeling of equilibrium or stability to a work of art.
Major types are symmetrical and asymmetrical.
Emphasis - (contrast) A way of combining elements to stress the differences between those
elements.
Proportion - A principle of design that refers to the relationship of certain elements to the whole
and to each other.
Gradation - A way of combining elements by using a series of gradual changes in those elements.
(large shapes to small shapes, dark hue to light hue, etc)
Harmony - A way of combining similar elements in an artwork to accent their similarities (achieved
through use of repetitions and subtle gradual changes)
Variety - A principle of design concerned with diversity or contrast. Variety is achieved by using
different shapes, sizes, and/or colors in a work of art.
Movement - A principle of design used to create the look and feeling of action and to guide the
viewer’s eye throughout the work of art.
20 th Century art include the following movement and style: Impressionism, Expressionism (with the
following art styles: Neoprimitivism, fauvism, Dadaism, surrealism and social realism), abstractionism, Abstract
expressionism, pop Art and Op Art, Conceptual Art and Contemporary Art (Installation Art and Performance Art).

MODERN ART
Title

I. Introduction:
Modern art happened in the late part of 19 th century up to the 20th century, there has been many
changes because artist during this period was given the freedom to express themselves through art, way too far
from the traditional or classical art of the previous century.
Many art movements came out which also depends on the influence of the artist who started each
movement. Take a closer look to the following , in order to understand more the
20th century art, also called MODERN ART.
Impressionism Art – is an art style that tried to capture an impression of what the eye sees at a given
moment and the effect of sunlight on the subject. The name impressionism was derived from the painting of
Claude Monet which was entitled “Impression Sunrise.” Impressionist painting is characterized by the following:
1. Impressionists paint quickly in order to capture the true ”impression” of the subject right at the moment, they
are more interested in conveying mood and atmosphere with their painting than creating a detailed and lifelike
replica of their subject.; 2. Time and motion are also elements in the works of the impressionists, they
concentrate on painting the changes in color and shape caused by light at different times of the day.; 3.
Impressionists prefer painting outdoors because they believe that the color of shade is influenced by the
surrounding colors and must shine and filter through the scene and flood onto the objects in the painting.; 4.
Their use of tiny dabs and dashes of bright colors that are mixed from pure hue and broken up with their
opposite colors seem to blend as you look at them from a distance.; 5. Subjects usually include the people of the
city life involved in everyday events, which may seem unimportant when compared with the grand subjects
painted by their earlier artists. The here and now are dominated.
Expressionism Art – is an art that expresses strong feelings and emotions. Distinct characteristics of
impressionism are, 1. artists created work with more emotional force rather than with realistic or natural
images.; 2. They distorted outlines, applied strong colors, and exaggerated forms.; 3. Artists work more with
their imagination and feelings rather than what their eyes saw in the physical world.
Expressionism art includes Neoprimitivism, fauvism, Dadaism, Surrealism and Social Realism.
Abstractionism – is an art movement which arose from the intellectual points of view in th 20 th century.
While expressionism was emotional, abstractionism was logical and rational. It involved analyzing, detaching,
selecting and simplifying. It includes Cubism, futurism, mechanical style and non-objectivism.
Abstract expressionism is another art form in the 20 th century which originated in New York in the 1940s
and 1950s and aimed at subjective emotional expression with particular emphasis on the creative spontaneous
act like Action Painting of Jackson Pollock and Color Field Painting.
Pop Art - an art movement of the 1960s in which artists wanted to make reforms in traditional values. 1.
Artists made use of common place , trivial, even nonsensical objects, pop 2. Artists made use of easily
recognizable objects and images from the emerging consumer society.; 3. Their inspirations were celebrities,
advertisements, billboards and comic strips. Another is Op art (short for optical art) – a form of action painting
with the action taking place in the viewer’s eye. Lines, spaces, and colors were precisely planned and positioned
to give the illusion of movement.
Contemporary Art- includes installation Art and performance Art. Installation art uses sculptural
materials and other media to modify the way the viewer experiences a particular space. Usually life size or
sometimes even larger. Performance art is a modern art in which the actions of the individual or a group at
particular place and in a particular time constitute the work. It can happen anywhere, at any time or for any
length of time. Its basic elements are time, space, performer’s body and relationship between performer and
audience.
