My Magic Square

Project
You must choose a 9 number sequence that is in doubles triples or singles, and are
in order. Once you have chosen your numbers, you will then add them. If you are
making a 3x3 square then you would divide the sum by 3. This is your magic
number!
For Example:
The Numbers I have chosen are a sequence of numbers from 12-20.
12

13

14

15

16

17

18

19

20

The sum of these numbers is 144. If we divide by 3 the magic number is 48. This
means all of the rows, columns, and diagonals will add to 48.
First we would start with the largest number in the sequence, and add it to the
smallest number. Then we would subtract each number, and have the remaining
number added in the middle. (The number in the middle should be a number in your
sequence.) You will continue until a number doubles or has already been used as a
combination. Then you will move on to the next number. You would stop with the
largest middle number in your combinations which would be your eight
combination.
The eight combinations are as follows
20+16+12 = 48
20+15+13= 48
19+17+12= 48
19+16+13= 48
19+15+14= 48
18+17+13= 48
18+16+14= 48
17+16+15= 48

Once you have created eight combinations, you will then create a table. The table
will consist of each number and the amount of times they are used in the eight
combinations.
Example:

You would then create a 3x3 table and input the numbers as follows. The number
that was used the most would be in the middle. The numbers that were used second
most would be used for the corners. The numbers that were used the least would fill
in all other available spots. (Remember when filling in with the least used numbers,
that you calculate, and that they add to your magic number).
Example:
The sum of all squares is 48.
