Grade 4, Spring 2015 - MSiC Campus

Math Masters courses (I and II) are specifically designed for students identified as gifted by their divisions. Math Masters
I challenges 4th graders to explore complex mathematical puzzles and engage in real-world, problem-solving situations
through a mathematical lens. Using a variety of materials and computer programs, students spend three Saturdays
immersed in rigorous activities working in groups communicating ideas and strategies. Students explore the creative side
of mathematics as they dive into problems with different themes each Saturday.
Topics include:

Fractal Geometry: Explore how mathematics can be used to describe patterns in nature. You and your team will
work to unlock the secrets embedded within Sierpinskis famous triangle.
Graph Theory: Learn about circuits and networks like the Knigsberg Bridge Problem. Will you know which way to
travel on this famous route? Once you know your way, you will be able to create your own bridge problem.
Mental Mathematics: Challenge yourself and see how you can organize and calculate numbers in your head using
a variety of strategies. How far will your team go and who will be a master of mental math?
Number Systems: We are all familiar with our number system, but is that the only one? Learn about other
systems - some you already know about. Find out which one you prefer and maybe even create your own.

General Information
1. Math Masters I will be held at the MathScience Innovation Center on the following Saturdays: February 28, March 7, and March 21,
2015 (Note: The weather related make-up is March 28th). Classes will meet from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Students are expected to attend
every Saturday. Check your calendar carefully!
2. Fourth grade students, identified as gifted, currently enrolled in the public schools of the consortium school divisions are eligible to
participate. Certificates will be awarded to every student who completes the class (only day absence allowed).
3. Students will be selected for attendance through the Gifted Program in their school division. Each school division will rank its
students and submit the applications to the MathScience Innovation Center. Submit your completed application to your Teacher of the
Gifted in your elementary school by the deadline set by your school division. Do not send your application directly to the MathScience
Innovation Center.
4. Your acceptance and registration into the program will be confirmed prior to the opening date by email and will be accompanied by
specific instructions for the program. If you do not have email, the U.S. mail will be used. A one-time fee of $30 is charged for materials
and is paid on the first day of class (advance pay with PayPal is encouraged; see acceptance email for details on how to pay using
PayPal).
5. Check the Centers website for upcoming classes: Lets Innovate! 6-8 Conference in April and Camp Innovation for rising 4th to 9th grade
summer, 2015.
