Definition

It is a renewable source of energy.

It comes from living and dead

organisms.

How it works

thermal (combustion, pyrolysis and

gasification)

Discovery

It was used when cavemen discovered

fire.

But it received its name in 1970s .

Pros

Fuel produced by grains and plant waste.

Produces heat, electricity and other

forms of energy.

Saves transportation costs

Reduces amount of waste in landfills and

oceans.

Cons

Releases carbon dioxide thus adding to

global warming.

High cost for accumulating and harvesting

biomass in raw form.

Requires much space for collection and

conversion of biomass.

Requires large quantities of water.

Amount of energy it
produces:

Half a kilo of a dry plant tissue can

produce as much as 1890 KCal of heat
which is equivalent to the heat
available from a quarter of kilogram of
coal.

Biomass energy produces 3% of the

worlds energy

Countries that use Biomass

United States

Germany

Sweden

Brazil

Japan

Puerto Rico
