Discussion: Has anyone been on a cruise before? What was it like? Today
well be reading a nonfiction text about a Caribbean cruise.
Explain that Caribbean cruises are a popular pastime in America. Cruise
YouTube video.
Pupils will read section one of A Supposedly Fun Thing Ill Never Do Again
by David Foster Wallace for 10 min; brief discussion about any questions
they had about the text; explain 6-toed cats on Hemingways estate
Pupils will have 25 min to work with a partner to identify as many
techniques as possible. They should colour code these in the text (personal
nature, humour, variety of sentence structure), number them, and then
explain them in the chart.
Pupils will be asked to stand at the front of the room with their paper. They
will have 45 seconds to arrange themselves in birthday order. They will
count off 1-10, then pair up with the matching number. With their new
partner, they will review what they have come up with so far and try to
come up with more strategies.
Each pair will be asked to share at least one example they came up with.
