What is Censorship?
Censorship is the suppression of

speech, public communication,


ideas or information that are found
objectionable by certain groups.
The

Constitution
of
India
guarantees Freedom of expression
but with certain restrictions to
maintain communal and religious
harmony.

History of Censorship
Socrates was sentenced to drink poison in 399BC.
Pope Paul IV ordered the first Index of Prohibited

Books in 1559 and then it was issued 20 times by different


popes.
Books were banned for ideologically dangerous content
and Inquisitions were carried out to ban and burn books
and sometimes authors as well.
Authors banned included Galileo (1633) and some victims
of trials included Thomas More (1535)

Book Challenge: An attempt to remove or restrict some

work based upon objections posed by a group.


Book Banning: Removal of the work from library or

curriculum, thereby restricting its access.
