In the division problem above, 12 is the ______________ and -3 is the _______________.
The answer to this division problem is called the _____________.
We have learned to use the area model for _______________________ already. Using
the area model for division is just like working ________________________.
For 12-3, we are asking the question: What is the width of a rectangle with an area
of __________ and a side length of _____________?
Here are the steps to model:
Step 1: Show the ____________ on the ________________ as the side length.
Step 2: Show the ______________ as a rectangle on the ____________. Make sure you
check your _________! The rectangle should have a side length that is the same as
the _________________.
Step 3: Answer the question: What is the __________ of my rectangle? This is the

How to Use the Area Model for Integer Division

12-3
In the division problem above, 12 is the dividend and -3 is the divisor. The answer
to this division problem is called the quotient.
We have learned to use the area model for multiplication already. Using the area
model for division is just like working backward.
For 12-3, we are asking the question: What is the width of a rectangle with an area
of 12 and a side length of -3?
Here are the steps to model:
Step 1: Show the divisor on the factor track as the side length.
Step 2: Show the dividend as a rectangle on the area mat. Make sure you check
your sign! The rectangle should have a side length that is the same as the divisor.
Step 3: Answer the question: What is the width of my rectangle? This is the
quotient (which is your answer to the division problem).
