State Government

The people of Minnesota are under four governments:

Federal: only federal government can declare war; make treaties, or


coin money.
State: this is divided into three branches which are legislative,
executive, and judicial.
County government
Local government
Legislative Branch

The legislative branch makes laws. States legislative branch has two
sections- the State Senate and the House of Representatives. Together
they make up our Congress
Senators are elected for four years when Representatives are elected
for two years
Executive Branch
The executive branch enforces the laws. At state level the governor is
the chief official of this this branch. He executes or carries out the laws
The governor is elected for a term of two years. In the event of his
death the Lt. Governor fills his place.
A bill cannot be paced without the governors signature if he vetoes it,
it can still be passed if two thirds of the other two branches vote on it.
Judicial Branch

The judicial branch must explain the laws. The judges in this
department handle causes that are brought into the courts
There are several different courts in Minnesota. The highest is the
state Supreme Court. It is composed of one chief justice and six
associate judges.
They are elected by the people for a term of six years.
