rundown apartment when a group of boys force their way in,
pretending to be police and it is then implied they have raped her.
Representation of Power: The power is shown
through the group of boys acting with a gang
mentality to overpower Volodya and go through
with their act. This demonstrates Lilya and
Volodyas weakness and can represent where they
stand in their urban environment.
Representation of Poverty: This is shown through
through their surroundings throughout and definitely
reinforced through the apartment and the use of close
up shots to emphasis the feeling of entrapment and the
bad conditions they are in. Also Volodya having his
basketball destroyed is a big deal as this is one of his
few and most prized possessions. Following this Lilya is
still optimistic for a better life in Sweden.
Representation of Conflict: The conflict is shown
through the struggle between Lilya and the gang of
boys as they force their way into her apartment and
rape her. Along with this there is conflict between
Volodya and his dad as he breaks the basketball with
the scissors, showing the strain their situation can
have on parenting as they appear to have lost their
