Assignment : BOD numericals

Q.1 If the BOD of a municipal wastewater at the end of 7 days is 60.0 mg/L and the
ultimate BOD is 85.0 mg/L, what is the rate constant?

Q.2 Assuming that the data in Problem 1 were taken at 25C, compute the rate constant
at 16C.

Q.3 The BOD5 of the raw wastewater is 225 mg/L. A long term BOD test has revealed
that this wastewater also has an ultimate BOD of 325 mg/L. Plant effluent testing has
shown that the BOD5 drops by 92% across the plant. Long term tests on the effluent
also show that the BOD decay coefficient is half the original value in the raw
wastewater.
a. What is the BOD decay coefficient of the raw wastewater?
b. What is the ultimate BOD of the treated wastewater?

Q.4 The BOD5 of a wastewater is 190 mg/L, determine the ultimate BOD assuming that
k1 is 0.25 / day.
Q.5 The reaction follows a first order reaction , determine the value of k graphically.

Formulas to be used:
Lt= Lo(1+ekt)
Temperature correction factor for decay coefficients to be used when the temperature is
other than 20C:
Kt= K20 (1.047)T-20
For first order reactions the C is plotted as Ln[C] versus time and k value is determined
by gradient of the line of best fit.
Mean=

x /n

Median is arranging the values in ascending order and finding out the middle value.
