knowledge on the United Nations.

1. Explain the meaning of the U.N. emblem.


- The Emblem is a view of the world from the northern pole. The olive represents peace and
the emblem was made to ensure safety.
2. How many countries are members of the U.N. today?
- 193
3. How might you describe the U.N. General Assembly? What happens when it convenes?
- The GA is a key sector in the United Nations and their role is to meet. When they meet
they discuss issues between countries and vote to try to find solutions. They are policy
makers.
4. Does the General Assemblys vote matter? Why or why not?
- Yes, each country has a representative who gets to vote. It is an equal way to make
decisions yet votes can be vetoed.
5. What is unique about the U.N.s headquarters?
- Its in Manhattan which is UN territory.
6. What are the main goals of the U.N.?
- The main goal of the UN is to keep everyone civil. They do this through problem solving
and voting.
7. Identify at least two challenges that exist in following the U.N. principles.
- Sometimes the countries opposing views can cause problems.
- They have to try to manage a budget.
8. What was the League of Nations, and how does it relate to the U.N.?
- A group created after world war one to solve problems. It is a similar idea to the UN and it
is located in Switzerland.
9. In what ways was the League of Nations an example of early globalization? Identify at least
two.
- It was a spread of ideas. For the first time countries were interacting and sharing their
viewpoints.
- It was a diffusion of knowledge. Countries were learning new things and new cultures.
10.Why did the League of Nations fail? Identify at least two reasons.
- They lost control going into World War Two.

Because it was based on the same idea of countries coming together to solve problems.

- Its job is to maintain peace and it has 15 members.
15.Why might the structure and operation of the Security Council be problematic? In other
words, what principle does it appear to violate? Identify two issues.
- Because only certain countries control it and that could be unfair to the others.
- They have the right to veto which some countries are opposed to.
16.Who is the newest U.N. member, and what noteworthy nations are not members of the U.N.?
Why has U.N. membership grown?
- Vatican City, Taiwan, and Palestine are not full members. It is growing because more
countries are wanting peace. The newest member is Sudan.
17.How is the U.N. funded?
- By voluntary donors.

1. The U.N. also has separate organizations that work to meet its goals. List four different
groups or goals these organizations work to help or promote (NOT the names of the
organizations).
- To oversee partnerships.
- To embrace Universal principals.
- To make sure the UN stays united.
- To establish the respect for the rule of law.
2. What is the title of the U.N.s leader, and who currently holds this position? How is this
position used to counterbalance the strength of some U.N. members?
- The leader is Ban Ki-Moon from South Korea. Where he comes from could result in issues.
3. What do you feel is the future of the U.N.? Does it have a place in todays world? Why or why
not? What can it do to improve its position? Write a 5-6 sentence paragraph explaining
your views.
I feel the future of the United Nations could go either way. The original League of Nations

failed because of an oncoming war so if another war is coming this could cause problems.
Since history repeats itself the same result could come out of failure. A War could be
possible because of the US debt so it is a scary realization. I think countries need to work
hard to keep the peace. To improve its position they could come up with new policies for
voting that wont cause issues. I feel that it has a place in todays world because more
and more people desire peace.
