What did you do? What did you learn? How successful were
you? Did you do it as a group or as an individual? If you did it
as a group, how did you contribute?

This was the first day the group had a chance to get
together; we used the day to plan what our film would
be about. I contributed towards the group by giving
character suggestions; the reason why I chose Iqra is
because shes a close relative and has one of the most
outgoing personalities Ive seen in younger children. At
first, everyone else was a bit hesitant on having her as
the main character because her being a primary school
student meant that were unable to film on weekdays
and have to do it during the weekend. We had a few
ideas about the storyline; however we didnt have a set
narrative structure by the end of the day.
Although I was absent, I contributed towards the pitch
presentation by writing up the information and
presenting it onto a Powerpoint Presentation; I ensured
that everyone had an equal input into it too. The
feedback that I had received from the rest of my group
was positive as the pitch was delivered clearly, it was
well-presented and any questions that the audience had
were answered well.
We finally had a set storyline as everyone contributed
specific ideas towards it. I decided to take on the role of
designing the storyboard by drawing up the pictures and
colouring them in, the reason why I chose to do this is
because art and design are one of my favourite hobbies.
We added any changes that we thought needed to be
made, and took pictures of the storyboard afterwards to
be made into an animatic.

Initially, I was going to design the character profiles on

paper. However, I then remembered an online
programme called Bitstrip where you can design your
own characters. I never actually used the programme
before, although I have received positive feedback about
it from friends and family before. In my opinion, the
character profile of Iqra came out the best as it
resembled her more than the other actors resembled
their Bitstrip character. I designed all the character
profiles myself and the overall result was much better
than I imagined it to be.
I completed the risk assessment which was more difficult
as I expected it to be. It involved me analysing each
possible problem, even the ones that I didnt even know
where a risk to us, such as family members walking in
between shots, I generally thought that was problem we
just had to avoid anyways.
Today we drew up the drawings (Iqras drawings) that
would be put up in the wall. This was probably one of my
most favourite sessions during the coursework as we
were allowed to act as if were 5 years old again.
As a group, we recorded the voiceover for the opening
sequence; myself and Kylie were the speakers, whilst
Tanhaz recorded.
We also completed the editing of the animatic
storyboard today; I contributed towards this by cropping
the images so that each picture is a clear image of the
drawing and nothing else and also by ordering the shots
in the correct positions. We had a few issues during this
because each time we played the animatic; we were
unable to hear the sound clips, although we soon sorted
this problem out.
Today I filmed a few of the scenes including Iqra such as
360 shot and the bathroom scene. It didnt go quite as
I expected it to giving 5 year old children instructions
and making them play a character role that isnt
themselves is almost possible. In addition to this, as I
couldnt get access to a dolly, I had to make do without
it, therefore the 360 camera movements were very
shaky. Moreover, I also experienced family members
accidentally walking into my shots while I was recording,

which was a problem I had mentioned in my risk

assessment.
We travelled to Whitechapel to film our broken down
house scene, as the area was quiet compared to most
and hardly anyone was around, it was fairly quick and
easy to get the recording over and done with. The long
shot recorded by Tanhaz was probably our best shot
weve had so far because of the stability, and he also
had the chance to get different viewpoints of the house
too.
We used this session to choose our best cuts out of all
the scenes that we recorded so far, in addition to this we
discussed the effects that we could possibly use in order
to create more suspense.
As a group, we met up in the library and filmed the
psychologist room scene. Overall, the filming process
didnt take very long and more importantly, we didnt
come across any hazards whilst filming, which I sort of
expected as we were filming in a public place.
The filming session with Iqra was relaxing compared to
last time as she was more willing to co-operate this time
round. I re-done the shots that I had taken the previous
week as they looked very unprofessional.
By this point, we had chosen and uploaded most of our
final shots onto Final Cut Pro, although I had a feeling
that we wouldn't be able to meet the deadline, because
we still had around 2/3 shots to take still along with
editing the entire opening sequence, which I thought we
wouldn't be able to get done on time.
Despite not being able to film due to the fact of Iqra
being at school, I thought that today was successful. As
a group, we discussed the other tasks that we needed to
get done, such as audience research, and script/sound
analysis. Collectively, each group member contributed a
few questions that we could use for our audience
feedback and we produced a questionnaire out of this.
Initially as we planned, this was meant to be our first
editing session; however we couldnt as we still had to
shoot our remaining scenes. At this point, I didnt know
whether wed actually meet the deadline, which
therefore made me quite panicky. Despite all that, we
ensured that our time was used productively as we used
the time to plan further and do extensive research such

as collecting feedback from our peers on our pitch

presentation.
We used today to get our final recordings of each scene
done, overall it was successful as we managed to get
each shot done more or less how we wanted it to look
like. I also thought that Iqra was more willing to
participate, mainly because by this stage she knew
exactly what to do and what not to do.
Surprisingly, we got a lot more done today than I had
expected us to. This included us putting our shots in
order, as well as editing most of our scenes too. We
worked successfully as a group as each member had a
say in how a certain scene should be edited. During this
session, I learnt how to put effects onto video scenes
using Final Cut Pro, the main effect that we used for
most of our scenes was Saturation -this was to give it an
old, rusty look. Although, we were still just a few days
behind our deadline and we still had a lot more editing
to get done.
Today was probably the most productive day that we've
ever had, as well as getting everything together, we
managed to finish editing the visual effects of each
scene. Moreover, in today's session, we managed to
start adding advanced effects and sound onto our scene.
I learnt how to us advanced effects using Final Cut Pro,
this included the 'Bad TV' effect which will be used
towards the end of our opening sequence, this is one of
my favourite effects and it is adapted to the overall
theme perfectly, especially because of the camera
motion flicking effect, in my opinion this was very
successful along with the flashback.
I made the most of today by ensuring everything besides
the editing was completed and ready to hand in
tomorrow as it's the deadline. It was successful as I only
had a few minor amendments to make and a few small
tasks to do too, I believe that this was only due to the
fact that I had organised my time throughout this
coursework efficiently, allowing myself enough time to
thoroughly get each task done without having to rush
through it towards the end.
