B. Lesson Proper
Read the poem below.
Vision by Feraya

A country of great beauty Swallowed up by gloominess

People so gentle and kind And bitterness
How can they carry on?
There is also ugliness
And cruelty Each of us has a role to play
Fleeing and hiding
And foraging for food To help our countrymen
To survive Not by hatred and blame
Not by giving false hope
Our people are in pain Or ideas
Suffering like no hell on earth Or concepts
Darkness and despair
Surround them But to see the big vision

And freedom is out of reach A vision that’s not small or limited

A vision that’s vast and spacious
Beaten and battered by life
Death and diseases So that Burma’s people may rise up
Of the mind and spirit Like a beautiful lotus
From a muddy pond.

About the poet and the meaning of the poem

Born in Kalaw, Shan State and referring to herself as simply “Feraya,” the writer has a collection of powerful poems on a variety of
issues plaguing her homeland. “Genocide is not the Answer” is a particularly poignant piece as Feraya shows her support of diversity by calling
ethnic groups “the jewels of Burma.” Her strong views of the country treating the ethnic groups poorly by “stifling them, controlling them,
oppressing them” come through in her writings and help to paint an image of the ongoing ethnic battles in the country

The author in the poem entitled Vision talks about the beauty and grace of the country, Burma, and its people. However, the speaker
thinks of all the negativity bounding the kind and gentle people of the country. Moreover, the author has high hopes that the people will wake
and rise up against the evils emanating from the government.
