UM-111

MULTIMETER

Operating Instructions

APPLICATIONS
The Type UM--111 Multimeter is intended to measure:
a/ d.c. and ax. voltages,
b/d.c. currents,and
/ resistances.
Owing to its many measuring ranges, small size and
simple operation, the UM-111 is a very useful tool
at a testing laboratory, a radio/TV servicing facility
and in all those situations where multirange measurements of voltages, currents and resistances are required.
A high input resistance (100000 fi/V) for the d.c.
voltmeter ranges as well as provision for extending
the d.c. voltmeter range up to 30 kV by means of
h.v. probe enables eiiJ. veftages at TV kinoscopes
to be measured. DC currents up to 30 A can be measured by means of the T B - 7 external shunt.
DESCRIPTION
The Type U M - l l l Multimeter employs a measuring system with movement suspended on taut bands

and is fitted -*uh a tingle xotaiy range switch. The

meter employs only two jacks for all measuring ranges.
Provisions has been made to protect both instrument
movement by means of diodes and measuring circuit
by means of a fuse.
The Type U M - l l 1 is fitted with a polarity switch
to reverse the measured voltage or current polarity
into opposite to that marked at the jacks - without
need to change the connection of the leads; the switch
changes the polarity of the connection to the instrument movement.
The series ohmmeter is supplied from built-in batteries R14 (1,5 V) a n d 6 F 22 (9 V).
The batteries and the fuse are accommodated in an
individual compartment at the meter bottom and,
in consequence, they can replaced quickly without
need to dismantle the instrument.
Four scales, are provided at the meter (figure 1):
1/ d.cVax. voltage and d.c. current scales (6 and 7),
21 1 Va. scale (5),
3/ resistance scale (4).

MEASUREMENTS
Preliminaries
Adjust the mechanical zero adjuster (8) so that the
pointer is set to to its zero position on the scale.
Set the polarity switch as follows:
a I d.c. voltage and current measurements:
"+" (pushbutton released): meter deflects cw If
the input polarity corresponds to the symbols provided at the input jacks;

11

"" (pushbutton operated): meter deflects cw if

the input polarity is opposite to that marked at the
input jacks.
\tf a x . voltage measurements:
"+' (pushbutton released).
I resistance measurements:
(pushbutton operated): the test voltage polarity at the input jacks corresponds to the symbols
provided at the input jacks.
Do not set the polarity switch to "+". (The test
voltage polarity remains unaffected).
WARNING
Keep the battery / fuse compartment dosed (lid provided) when proceeding measurements! Dangerous
cottages nfay appear there.
Measurements of dx. Voltages
Set the range switch to desired range or 1000 V (if
the value to be measured is not known even approximately). Connect the meter to the circuit under test.

12

Read the unknown value on the scale (6) or (7),

according to the selected range.
Measurements of d.c. Currents up to 1A
Set the range switch to the desired range or 1 A (if
the value to be measured is not known even approximately). Insert the meter into the circuit under test and
read the unknown on the scale (6) or (7), according
to the selected range.
Measurements of DC Currents from 1 A to 30 A

/ . - ! <S> i
Fig. 3

13

Set the range switch to its "0,1 V" position. Use the
test- or other leads of total resistance not exceeding
100 m to connect the TB-7 Shunt (Part No. P - 7 1 - 0 4
for 0 - 3 / 1 0 A or Part No. P - 7 1 - 0 5 for 0 - 3 0 A) to
the meter input jacks. Insert the respective terminals
of the shunt into the test circuit.
Read the unknown current on the scale (6) or (7),
according to the shunt range.
Measurements of AC Voltages
Set the range switch to the desired range or 1000 V
(if the value to be measured is not known even approximately). Connect the meter across the circuit under
lest and read the unknown on the scale (6) or (7)
according to the selected range.
Use the 1 V . scale (5) is employing the 1 V a.c.
range switch position.
Resistance Measurements
Set the range switch to the desired resistance range.
Before proceeding the measurement, short the input
jades together and adjust the zero control (10) so that
the pointer sets at the "0" line on the resistance
scale.

14

If you cannot set the pointer to the "0" lint, the

ohmmeter battery cells are poor and should be replaced by new ones.
Hawing completed the zero adjustment step, the
meter is ready for measurements and the unknown
can be connected to input the jacks.
Measurements of DC Voltages up to 30 kV
The SWN-301 probe is intended to measure eJi.t.
voltages occurring in tv sets and other similar electronic
instruments.
WARNING
The 1 - 3 0 kV measurement procedure can be performed only when the following conditions are met:
aI Either side of the unknown voltage source is connected to ground.
b/ The highest short circuit current from the unknown
voltage source does not exceed a value of 10 mAThe procedure is as fallows:
- Set the range switch to its "0,1 V" position.
~ Connect the "+" probe lead to the jack (2).

IS

Connect the " " probe lead to the jack (3) and
ground.
Take the probe by the insulating grip and touch the
ungrouded side of the unknown with the probe tip.
. Read the number of units on the scale (6) and cal culate the unknown (one) division corresponds
to 500 V.
The meter/probe connection diagram is shown in Fig. 4.
