WHY MENTOR?
Kids who are born in adversity are more likely to be
involved in risky behavior (i.e. drugs, dropout, gang
related activity, etc.)
This doesnt have to be so...there is hope.

WHAT IS BIG BROTHER BIG SISTER

Big brother Big sister is the nations largest volunteer
supported mentor network
Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, matches
by connecting children (littles) ages 6-18, with a
mentor (Bigs) who has similar interests and
personality.
They off er Match Support which off ers support,
advice, and resource during the course of your
relationship with your little.

WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?

Becoming a big is a rewarding experience that allows you
to greatly infl uence a childs life while creating a lasting
relationship that can last for years.
Some of the requirements are:
Background check
References
1 year commitment (these usually last for years, there have
been matches that have stemmed for over 10 years)
Minimum visitation of 2 visits a month for 2-4 hours

Being consistent
The most important aspect of being a big is making yourself
available on a consistent basis. Its showing you care. Its
having fun with a child. Its listening to them talk about
whatever is going on in their lives. Its a series of small,
teachable moments that, in the end, make a BIG diff erence.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

By being a Big you are able to develop an one to one
relationship with your little by doing activities that
you both enjoy, by supporting/encouraging, and just
by being ther.
What makes the biggest diff erence for the child is not
the kinds of activities or the amount but the fact they
have a caring adult in their lives. Someone they can
turn to and look up to.

46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
27% less likely to begin using alcohol
