PROPERTIE

S OF
INEQUALIT
Y

Properties of Inequality
1. For all real numbers p and q where p > 0,
If p > q, then q <p.
If p < q, then q >p.
2. For

q > 0:

all real numbers p, q, r and s, if p >q and r s, then

p+r > q +s.
3. For all real numbers p, q and r, if p >q and r >0, then pr >
qr.
4. For all real numbers p, q and r, if p >q and q > r, then p > r.
5. For all real numbers p, q and r, if p = q+r, and r >0, then
p>q

The last property of inequality is used in

geometry such as follows:

How to Combine Inequalities

Example: How do you write x < 5 and x > -3 as a combined inequality?

From the number line, we observe that the value of x must be a value
between -3 and 5, that is, x is greater than -3 but less than 5. In
symbols, -3 < x< 5.
