PROPERTIES OF INEQUALITIES
1. For all real numbers a and b where a > 0, b > 0:
a. If a > b then b < a.
b. If a < b then b > a.
Example:
a. a=7 , b = 4
Since a and b are both real numbers and greater than 0, in
applying the first property, we get :
If 7 > 4 then 4 < 7.
2. For all real numbers a, b, c and d , if a > b and c d , then a +c > b + d.
Example:
a. a=7, b = 4, c=5, d = 5
Based on the given, a > b, and c d, since 7 > 4 and both c nd d is
equal to 5 then we can used the second property which is if a > b and
c d then a + c > b + d.
If 7 > 4 and 5 5, then 7 + 5 > 4 +5
12 > 9
3. For all real numbers a , b and c, if a > b and c > 0, then ac > bc.

Example:
a=7, b = 5 and c = 4
Since 7 > 5 and 4 > 0, we can make use of the third property
which is if a > b and c > 0 then ac > bc, therefore we get :
If 7 > 5 and 4 > 0 , then 7(4) > 5(4)
28 > 20
4. For all real numbers a, b and c , if a >b and b > c, then a > c.
Example:
a=6, b= 3 and c=2
Since 6 > 3 and 3 > 2, we can make use of the fourth property to
prove that a > c. Using the fourth property,
If a >b and b > c, then a > c, we get:
If 6 > 3 and 3 >2 then 6 > 2.
IV.

Assessment:
True or false: If the given problem is true , write TRUE and identify what
properties of inequalities are being used. If it is FALSE, write FALSE.

If 7 > 4 and 3 > 0 , then 7(4) > (4)(3).

If 4 > 3 and 3 >3 , then 4(3) >3(3).
If 3 > (-1) and (-2) > 0 , then 3 + ( -2) > (-1) + 0.
If 4 > 5 then 5 <3.
If 3<5 then 5 > 3.
