    VillageinPittsburghandBaldwinHillsVillage(knowntodayasVillageGreen)
    inLosAngeles.HeattendedbothColumbiaUniversityandtheEcledes
    BeauxArts.

    In1921,heandHenryWrightdevelopedapartnershiprootedinEbenezer
    Howards"GardenCity"idealsofsafe,communitybasedhousing.With
    Wright,LewisMumford,andothercolleagues,SteinfoundedtheRegional
    PlanningAssociationofAmericain1923envisioningwidespreadreformof
    U.S.planninganddesignpractices,focusingonhighdensityurbanhousing
    andtheresidentialsubdivision.Theirdesignsweresuccessfulingreatpart
    becauseoftheiremphasisonthelandscape.Forexample,Sunnyside
    Gardensprovidedcentralcourtyardswherefamiliescouldgatherwhilethe
    suburbanlocaleofRadburnledtoexperimentationwithperipheralroadsand
    shortautomobilefriendlyculsdesacswithavarietyofhousingunittypes.
    SteinlaterservedwithReginaldJohnsonasconsultingarchitectsforthe
    designofBaldwinHillsVillage,inLosAngeles.SteinalsoauthoredToward
    NewTownsforAmerica.
    ThejointworkofSteinandWrightchangedthewaytownsareplanned,with
    significantadvancementsinthemethods,policies,andtheoriesundergirding
    contemporaryplanningefforts.
