READING: Academic Mathematics Geometric Relations Similar and Congruent Figures When two figures are similar, it means that they have exactly the same shape, even if they are | different sizes. The triangles at right are similar. | They have the exact same shape, even though each figure is exactly half the size of the previous one. The length is half the original length and the width NS L is half the original width. The last figure is turned on its side, but it’s still similar to the others. Now suppose you have a picture of the shark, like the one on the right. You put the picture on a machine that makes copies and set the controls, to normal, or 100%. Now the copier will print a figure that is exactly the same size and shape as the original. The two figures are stil similar, but they are also congruent. The two congruent figures are exactly the same in size and shape. ‘All congruent figures are similar, because both congruent and similar figures must be exactly the same shape. Look carefully at the two red figures You'll see that they are also congruent. e029 &03 But are all similar figures congruent? No, only those figures thet are both the same shape and size are congruent. Look carefully at the two. figures at the bottom right. To tell if two shapes are congruent, you can first check to see if they are similar. If they are similar, then check to see if they are the same size. If they are the same size and shape, then they are congruent cal ‘©The Continental Press, Inc. DUPLICATING THIS MATERIAL IS ILLEGAL, 4 READING: Academic Mathematics Geometric Relations 1.
