READING: Conversational Language Resources and Supplies Simon’s “Green” Music Simon decided to make musical instruments out of recycled products. He was so excited that he told his friends. The students told their teacher, Ms. Garcia, about Simon's cool, recycled instruments. They asked if they could all make instruments in class. Ms. Garcia thought it was a fabulous idea and told the students to bring in their recycled materials. The next day, Simon and his classmates shared thelr designs. The students worked hard during class. They transformed laundry detergent bottles into hand drums. Aluminum cans became old-fashioned washboard instruments when rubbed with a wooden stick. Yogurt containers and tin cans filled with tiny pebbles became rattles. The students decorated their instruments with colorful ribbons and featheis. The young musicians practiced their instruments. They played familiar rhythms and developed new ones. On the day of the parade, Simon and his “Earth Day Drummers” delighted the crowds. It made Simon happy to see that his idea had come to life.
