READING: Academic Mathematics aa Line Segments and Angles Parallel and Perpendicular Lines Parallel lines or line segments are always the same distance apart and never cross each other. Railroad tracks are one example of parallel lines. If the two rails don’t stay parallel, the train cannot travel on them. parallel lines The opposite sides of a door or window are also parallel. The writing rules on a sheet of tablet or notebook paper are parallel, and the boards on a wood floor are parallel. Perpendicular lines intersect to form right angles. Where they meet, 90-degree angles are perpendicular made. A 90-degree angle is like the square corner lines of a book or a sheet of paper. Anywhere you see a square corner, you are looking at perpendicular lines. Any two sides of a rectangular picture frame that meet are perpendicular. Some windows have small pieces of glass separated by strips of wood called muntins, which are perpendicular. William Penn planned the streets for the city of Philadelphia around 1681. Most older, unplanned cities at the time had irregular, winding |] streets, Penn designed a city with an orderly grid of |} parallel and perpendicular lines. The streets running north and south make up one set of parallel streets, and the streets running east and west make up a second set of parallel streets. These two sets are at right angles to each other, so they form ‘numerous pairs of perpendicular lines.
