WRITING: Conversational Language and Academic Language Arts Dialogue “Mr. Allen has assigned us a report on hyenas," Mike said in a flat, bored voice. “it will be fun,” Juan assured his friend as they looked through a research book. Just then, Mike's eyes opened wide. “Wow!” he exclaimed, pointing to the diagram of a hyena’s body. "Look at those big, sharp teeth!" Juan grinned. “See, you are getting interested already.” “Look at the picture on this website. Hyenas look like dogs,” said Juan. “But the captions says they are more like cats,” noticed Mike. “And the Interesting Facts box says they live in groups as large as 80. The females are the leaders,” added Juan The boys did a great job of presenting the facts, ‘they learned. Their classmates listened attentively. Mike finished the presentation by saying, “The last fact we'd like to share about hyenas is that they are the size of a dog and weigh only as much as an adult human, but they can kill big animals like antelopes and wildebeests for dinner." “People use the expression laugh like a hyena, but there's nothing funny about these powerful beasts," laughed Juan as the boys went back to their seats.
