Multiphysicstreatssimulationsthatinvolvemultiplephysicalmodelsormultiplesimultaneousphysical
phenomena.Forexample,combiningchemicalkineticsandfluidmechanicsorcombiningfinite
elementswithmoleculardynamics.Multiphysicstypicallyinvolvessolvingcoupledsystemsofpartial
differentialequations.
Manyphysicalsimulationsinvolvecoupledsystems,suchaselectricandmagneticfieldsfor
electromagnetism,pressureandvelocityforsound,ortherealandtheimaginarypartofthequantum
mechanicalwavefunction.Anothercaseisthemeanfieldapproximationfortheelectronicstructureof
atoms,wheretheelectricfieldandtheelectronwavefunctionsarecoupled.

relyontheFiniteElementMethodorsimilarcommonplacenumericalmethodsforsimulatingcoupled
physics:thermalstress,electromechanicalinteraction,fluidstructureinteraction(FSI),fluidflowwith
heattransportandchemicalreactions,electromagneticfluids(magnetohydrodynamicsorplasma),
electromagneticallyinducedheating.Inmanycases,togetaccurateresults,itisimportanttoinclude
mutualdependencieswherethematerialpropertiessignificantforonefield(suchastheelectricfield)
varywiththevalueofanotherfield(suchastemperature)andviceversa.

MultipleDiscretizationMethods
Therearecaseswhereeachsubsetofpartialdifferentialequationshasdifferentmathematicalbehavior,
forexamplewhencompressiblefluidflowiscoupledwithstructuralanalysisorheattransfer.To
performanoptimalsimulationinthosecases,adifferentdiscretizationproceduremustbeappliedto
eachsubset.Forexample,thecompressibleflowisdiscretizedwithafinitevolumemethodandthe
conjugateheattransferwithafiniteelementanalysis.fluidynMP[9]isoneoftheexampleof
commerciallyavailablesoftwarepackageforsimulatingMultiphysicsengineeringproblemsusing
MultipleDiscretizationMethods.
