Part2(a): RECRYSTALIZATIONOFIMPUREACETANILIDE
1Fluteapieceoffilterpaperandplaceitintoastemlessfunnel.Setthefunnelina
beaker.
2FitaBchnerfunneltoafilterflask.(SeeFigure1).Becertaintoclamptheapparatus
toaretortstandwithathreeprongclamp.
3Placeapieceofweighedfilterpaperintothefunnel,withthecurvedsurfaceofthe
paperfacingawayfromtheceramicsurface.
Thefilterpapershouldlieflat,coveringalltheholes.Checkthatthetrapforthevacuum
containsnoliquid(disassembletrapanddiscardtheliquidbeforeyoubegin)
4Obtaina1gsampleoftheimpureacetanilideprovided,whichmaycontainanyorall
ofthefollowingcontaminants:sucrose,sand,shreddedcork,carbonblackanddirt.
5Addenoughhotwatertotheimpuresolidina50mLErlenmeyerflaskuntilthe
entirewhitesolidhasdissolved,allthewhile,keepingthetemperatureofthemixture
above90C.

Howmuchwaterisneeded?(Theapproximateanswertothisquestionmaybe
obtainedbyconsideringthedatafromchemicalhandbooksonthesolubilityof
acetanilide,4.3gto100mLofwaterat90C.)Recordthevolumeofwaterthatyou
actuallyused(..)
Whenyoufeelthattheentirewhitesolidisinsolution(remember,someinsoluble
impuritiesmaybepresent!),pourthehotmixturethroughthefilterpapertodoagravity
filtrationwhichremovesinsolubleimpurities(seeFigure2).
Ifcrystalsforminthefunnelduringthisprocess,use12mLofhotwatertodissolve
them.
6Keepthesolutionhotbyplacingthesetuponthesteambathwhileliquidisbeing
addedtothefunnelabove.
Whenalltheliquidhasbeenfiltered,rinsetheremainingsolidandthefilterpaperdown
withasmallquantityofhotwater,thenremovethefunnel.Recordtheappearanceofthe
insolubleimpurities,ifany.Whatdoyouthinkthisresidueis?Discardtheresidueinthe
regulargarbagepail.
