EX 8: SOUTH/CENTRAL PACIFIC

A car carrier, on a tight schedule, has to make a passage from Sydney (Aus) to
Panama Canal, in June. Her sea speed is 22 knots.
1. Ocean Passages for the World recommends a few routes. Discus the
advantages and disadvantages of the two routes Central Route and
Great Circle Route North of New Zealand - after making comparisons in
terms of distance and elements of nature, specially when she was to
loose 1 knot on the great circle route.
2. Calculate the distances on both the routes, adding 260 miles for coastal
waters.
3. Calculate ETA off Panama Canal for both the routes if she was to leave
Sydney at 1400hrs LT, on 28 June.
4. On the chartlet provided, draw the surface current and wind for time of the
year.
5. What other hazards could effect her progress?
