Toolmakers clamp
Niki Rafferty

Introduction
1

The toolmakers clamp is possibly one the most common work holding devices
used in machining procedures, it provides an excellent grip factor that enables the
user to apply a large amount of pressure to the held work piece without fear of it
moving or jumping out of place and therefore ruin the work.
Most clamps are made from mild steel as is the case with this design, which will
be using bright mild steel to provide a solid clamp.
The clamps are tightened with the use of two leadscrews that allow the jaws to
travel 0-100mm allowing the clamp to be used with a wide variety of work pieces
up to 10cm depth.

Clamp Specifications Minimum Maximum

Jaw gripping area: 300 mm2 (minimum) to 1500 mm2

(maximum).
Number of thread in jaw: 10 (minimum) to 15 (maximum).
Gripping length (L1): 7.5 thread diameter.
Gripping end angle (): 20 to 30 (both jaws must have angled
gripping ends).
Minimum jaw width: 2 thread diameter.
Maximum jaw length (L2): 180 mm.
Jaw travel: 60 mm (minimum) to 100 mm (maximum).
Distance from jaw gripping edge to first leadscrew centre line =
distance between leadscrew
center lines.
Leadscrew threads available: M4 0.7, M6 1.0, M8 1.25,
M10 1.5.
The fixed jaw must be attached to leadscrew 1.
