HOMEWORK
Now you choose 2 countries to compare. You can choose your country and another country, or choose a
developed country and a developing country. Write an essay. Have a paragraph for each subject. You
can choose the same categories I did, or some of your own. Please talk about three points in your
contrast: health, economy and education. Please get your research from these sites. They are the
sources I used.

Here is an outline to help you. I have only put two areas under paragraph 1, but you can decide how
many you want to discuss (at least two with at least one example for each). If you follow the worksheet
we did in class (health, economy and education), health will have six areas to contrast, education three
and education three. Each paragraph should follow the same organization. Have a topic sentence. Then
have a general sentence saying which part of this topic you will discuss. Follow this with a specific
example (like the worksheet we did in class). After you have finished with all the examples for that part
(e.g. hospitals), move on to the next part you will discuss (e.g. obesity). Give an example that proves
your point. Continue.
OUTLINE
I. INTRODUCTION
A) background- give some brief information about both countries: location, population, wealth.
Do not go into a lot of detail. This information can be found on any of the above sites. Do not
write more than four sentences.
B) thesis- state your topic (contrast between two countries) and controlling idea (which areas
you will contrast)
II. PARAGRAPH 1: 1st contrast
A) topic sentence (e.g. health)
B) 1st area of topic ( e.g. life expectancy)
1) clear example from worksheet
nd
C) 2 area (e.g. hospitals)
1) specific example (e.g. hospital beds)
2) specific example (e.g. physicians)
III. PARAGRAPH 2: 2nd contrast- follow same pattern as above
IV PARAGRAPH 3: 3rd contrast-follow same pattern as above
IV. CONCLUSION
A) restate thesis
B) prediction or suggestion
