WHAT IS BIOFILM CARRIER ALL ABOUT?

The bio-film carrier is made of

high density, durable Polypropylene plastic and
shaped as small cylinders with a cross on the
inside of the cylinder and fins on the outside.
Various shapes and sizes are introduced by
numerous manufacturers. One of the important
advantages of the moving bed bio-film reactor
(MBBR) is that the minimum filling fraction of
carrier volume surface space in the reactor is
subject to sewage loads volume; i.e. so many
cubic meters of carriers per cubic meters of
sewage water needed to be treated; per unit of
time.
By increasing the filling fraction (increase the % of carriers in a given volume space) one can
increase surface area and capacity of the reactor to reduce BODs without needing additional tanks,
whereas, a larger air blower may be required to adequately suspend, move the increase volume of
carriers. So the MBBR application is simple as well as flexible for sewage volume adjustments.

Microorganisms growing on the carrier media are also much more resistant to pH and toxic
shock as well as fluctuations in BODs. Produced bio-solids are also easy to separate and dewater.
The bacterias activated sludge grows primarily on the internal surface of the carriers;
breaking down the organic matter from the waste water. The aeration system keeps the carriers,
with activated, living bio-film, in motion. The excess sludge bio-film will separate from the carriers
and will flow with the treated water towards the final separator for removal from the final MBBR
effluent water.
