The Three Refuges

Buddha saraa gacchmi

Five Subjects for Frequent Recollection

I am subject to aging. Aging is unavoidable.


I am subject to illness. Illness is unavoidable.
I am subject to death. Death is unavoidable.
All that is dear and appealing to me will change and vanish.
I am the owner of my actions, heir to my actions, born of my actions, related
through my actions, and live dependent on my actions. Whatever I do, for
good or for evil, to that will I fall heir.

is swept away. It does not endure.


offers no shelter. There is no one in charge.
has nothing of its own. One has to pass on, leaving everything
is insufficient, insatiable, a slave to craving.

Three marks of existence

Sabbe sakhra anicc


Sabbe sakhra dukkh
Sabbe dhamm anatt

All formations are impermanent.


All formations are unsatisfactory.
All things are without self.

Insight Meditation

The minds is aware of the rising and falling of the abdomen, ignoring everything else.

Wanderings of the mind are noted (thinking, imagining, remembering, planning,


visualizing).
Intentions to move are noted (intending), movements as well (straightening,
scratching, etc.).
Unpleasant physical sensations are noted (pain, tension, etc.) and the mind
focuses on that place.
Feelings and moods (sleepy, agitated, happy, etc.) are noted.
