Question (1): (10 marks)
A rod ABCD consists of three segments made of
three different materials. Segment AB has 4
diameter of 320 mm and made of Aluminum
Segment BC is made of Bronze and has 200 mm
diameter while segment CD is made of steel and
has 100 mm diameter. If the rod fits securely
between the fixed supports A and D when the
temperature is 25 °C, then it is required to:
i) Determine the reactions at supports when
the temperature reaches 50°C. (5 marks)
ii) The stresses developed in the different segments due the rise in temperature.
i) The change of length of the bronze part due to the above rise in temperature.
