Dear Mr. and Mrs. Wilson,

I am a graduate student in the Department of Early and Middle Grades Education at West Chester
University. For the next eight weeks, I would like to include your child as a participant in a
research project where I will be examining the benefits of a tiered approach to literacy from a
third graders perspective. During the project, your child will be observed throughout her normal
daily school routine, including her tier two and tier three lessons by Mrs. Neitz, Mrs. Sabata, and
Ms. Miller. Your child will only need to complete a Reading Interest Survey at an appropriate
time during the school day.
Your childs participation in this project is completely voluntary. I do not anticipate any greater
risk than normal daily life. This project does not require your child to complete any tasks other
than her normal daily reading routine. Any documentation collected will be a part of the regular
Pottstown School District requirements for reading and the Student Study Process. In addition, I
may contact you and her tutor for additional information.
The results of this project will be used for an online website that is required in my course, EDE
611 Teacher Research, at West Chester University. A pseudonym will be used for your child to
protect her confidentiality. The website is a private, password-protected site that is viewable by
myself, graduate classmates, and my professor. I will present my research in May at the West
Chester University graduate presentations and I am happy to share my website with you, if you
would like to see the finished project.
