Curriculum Comparison Assignment

After enrolling in college or university, the next decision is choosing a major.
So many students
do not know exactly what they want to major in, but have an idea of what
they want to do
when they graduate. Interdisciplinary Studies is the type of major that will
allow you to branch
out in so many fields, career wise. In this paper, I will compare Norfolk State
University (NSU)
Interdisciplinary (INT) Studies Program with Virginia Wesleyan College (VWC),
Interdisciplinary
(INST) Studies Program.
Norfolk State University (NSU), offers an Undergraduate Program for
Interdisciplinary (INT)
Studies, which was created in the early 1990s. There are approximately 400
students that are
enrolled in the INT program, and 6 members of the faculty. The program
requirements are that
students should enroll at NSU, or any other college that is a member of the
Tidewater
Consortium. Students must have access to a computer (at home, work,
school), Internet
connection, and a web browser. Student must maintain a C average or
above. The core

curriculum consists of a standard curriculum, online curriculum, and a

military curriculum. It
requires 24 credit hours of Int core, 23 credit hours of electives, and 2
concentration Areas. The
senior Project consists of a senior thesis that is written by every senior during
there last year.
The mission statement is for every student to familiarize students w INT,
assist students in
acquiring INT skills, abilities, and attitudes, to foster students understanding
on INT links of the
world, develop and strengthen studies, critical thinking skills, enhance
students intellectual
perspective by asking and answering questions until a holistic presentation is
possible, prepare
students to be responsible, effective, production administration in their own
lives and in our
every evolving global world. The students are expected to obtain careers in
the following:
Community and Youth Development, City, State, and Federal Government,
International
Service, National Security, Investigative Reporting, Public Safety, Hospital
and Medical
Administration, Law, Criminal Justice, Theological Work, Urban Studies and
Urban Education,
African American Studies, Womens Studies, Journalism/Mass
Communication, and Technology.
The scope and objective is a unique flexible and worthwhile major and
academic area. NSU
defines Interdisciplinary Studies as integrated idea; theories, knowledge and
information from

more than one discipline in order to establish holistic truth, solve problems
fully, and create
alternatives and present data. The interesting thing about the INT program is
that not only can
a student take classes on campus, and online but they also have classes
offered on the Norfolk
Naval station base and the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center.
Virginia Wesleyan College (VWC) offers an undergraduate program for
Interdisciplinary (INST)
Studies that was created in 1982. There are 9 INST majors including:
American Studies,
Business, Classical Studies, Environmental Studies, Health and Human
Services, International
Studies, Recreation and Leisure Studies, Social Studies, and Woman and
Gender Studies. They
have many students, with 12 faculty members. The program requirements
consist of the
students must maintain a 2.0 g.p.a, and must complete a course description.
The core
curriculum is the INST program along with one of the nine majors. It includes
15 INST classes,
and the rest in the major classes. The seniors project is to provide a senior
thesis. They offered
a career counseling program that is done by appointment only. A student
must file a
declaration of Major form with the registrars office at least three semesters
before
graduation, and summer doesnt count as a semester. The mission of the
program is to cut
across various departmental lines and bring together related courses in
various disciplines.

Before the students graduate, they offer workshops. After they graduate they
offer job search
assistance, and also help them get internships until graduation. The alumnis
network with
fellow alumnis in their profession and in their communities. The scope of the
program is used
for courses that cant be appropriately placed under a single, or triple course
rubric faculty
members proposed such as courses must seek approval from all three
divisions before the
course can be approves by Educational program Course. VWC, define INST as
it brings together
related courses in various disciplines. The interesting fact is that the alumina
help provide
scholarships to children of fellow alumni who wants to follow in the parents
footsteps.
There were some differences in the Interdisciplinary Program from both
schools, and there
were some similarities. They both have similar meanings which gives us
students the
opportunity to engage in different disciplines that is going to help us in our
careers after
graduation. This research actually gave me a better understanding of what is
required for the
students majoring in the program, and I got to see all of the careers choices
behind the major. It
was a great research, and I enjoyed researching the information.
