Implementation

of the Signs of Suicide (SOS) in the Denver Public Schools

Office of Social Emotional Learning, Division of Student Services

What is SOS?

An evidence based Tier One Prevention suicide prevention program for grades 6 to 12.
Supports the Districts Health Agenda 2015 Goal #4b: In order to increase primary prevention for
suicide, provide the Signs of Suicide (SOS) curriculum to every 6th and 9th grader
Students three months after receiving the training were 40% less likely to report a suicide
attempt in the three months after the program. (Aseltine & DeMartino, 2004)
The beneficial effects of SOS were observed among high school-aged youth from diverse
racial/ethnic backgrounds, highlighting the program's utility as a universal prevention program.
Aseltine, James and Glanovsky 2007)

Why do we need it?

Health Kids Colorado Survey of 6 to 12th graders in DPS showed that in 2011-12

25% of students report having feelings of depression in the past year

13% of students seriously considered suicide in the past year
8% attempted suicide in the past year

How does it work?

There is a middle school curriculum and a separate high school curriculum

The students are taught in three 45 minute sessions
Teaches students to identify symptoms of depression and suicidality in themselves or friends
Teaches how to respond effectively by seeking help from a trusted adult
Staff and parent trainings are available in English and Spanish

Successful implementation in DPS

Last year SOS was taught at 94% of the schools serving 6th and 9th graders
Over 9000 students received the SOS program in 98 schools
Average student score on suicide prevention skills: pretest 32% posttest 86%
Schools that have implemented SOS for several years include: CEC, CLA, DCIS, DSA, Florence
