Deaf students in fifth grade will view the video of ASL poetry of Cow and Rooster and

analyze the poetic features such as patterns and repetitions. They will recognize only
three handshapes used in the Cow and Rooster story. For the students ASL poetry
project, they will create handshape story but they can use up to three handshapes.

Course Outcomes
Course Description
This ASL literature course is designed to promote students to become creative in ASL
storytelling and appreciate ASL literature including a variety of genres such as nature in
ASL Poetry.
Student Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, students will be able to:

Engage in storytelling, rhythm compositions and visual gesturing communication to
deliver their ideas and experiences through a creative process using a bilingual
Communication in the classroom.

Develop self-identity, appreciation and respect of their culture and their communities
through exposure of written and signed literature work.

Understand the diversity in literature and its value by sharing diverse perspectives
in different cultures and traditions.

Integrate their ASL literature and American literature skills to broaden their cultural
